I joined the Navy at 18 with a GED and pursued a career as a Hospital Corpsman. My duties were such that I worked in every phase of medicine possible. My primary work was in the medical laboratory. Longing to go to Medical School, I went to college at night and sought a degree that would allow me to do so. I was excepted into a commissioning program where I was sent to the University of South Carolina to study physics. After completion of that degree, I served as a surface warfare officer for 4 years and applied to med school. I was accepted, but the Navy decided I should stay in surface warfare. I was given a scholarship to attend the Naval Postgraduate School where I changed my designator to Oceanography and graduated with a double major in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography where my focus was in Remote Sensing.  After retiring from the Navy I became a pilot and then taught meteorology for the Air Force and later studied at the University of Southern Mississippi and earned a PhD in Physics and Science Education. I now own and operate the Las Arenas Earth and Sky Observatory/Airport in Alamosa, Colorado (2CO2, elevation 7600', runway length 2700', dirt) and research flight characteristics of aircraft in high altitude mountain environments and study the weather of the San Luis valley in Colorado.
