I served as a technology director in a combat zone and was required to brief my commanders on the status of my communications efforts once every two weeks. The bi-weekly conference included stakeholders and command teams from all over the province and numbered roughly 30 people. I answered questions regarding the status of outposts that were shutting down as well as internal communications initiatives. I conducted several decision briefs and won the support of command teams from every corner of the province because I provided easy to read and understand briefs that translated complex technical jargon into language a lay person could absorb.

My team implemented the Solarwinds network monitoring tool for our United States and Afghanistan network, constructed and deployed a disaster recovery server with high availability and real-time replication, and developed a server diagnostic checklist for periodic audits. I developed a lengthy continuity of operations plan for my unit that involved assets covering two states and was required to comply with DoD and other federal regulations in addition to cyber security compliance visits. I wrote cyber security policies, memos, and troubleshooting guides for the Third Infantry Division Commanding General when I served as the Computer Network Defense Officer in Charge which included wire and LAN diagrams, seating charts, and building schematics.

My team and I amassed the best information security record out of the seven provinces under Regional command South IN Afghanistan for which I was awarded the Bronze Star and the Australian Silver Commendation (Bronze Star equivalent).  I was responsible for the information security of all the above mentioned networks and used networking tools such as 802.1x, port security, and Access Control Lists, as well as server based tools such as multi-factor authentication, Public Key Infrastructure, ePolicy Orchestrator by McAfee and the related Host Based Security System in addition to Active Directory Group Policy.

I routinely provided cost-benefit analyses to my commanders for equipment I needed to requisition to provide more capabilities for the organization. The largest project involved moving the entire warzone IT infrastructure that supported over 1,000 users from one part of the compound to the other without losing IT or telecommunications capabilities. I developed the plan, gained approval from both of my Colonels that oversaw the province (one American, one Australian), and supervised the implementation of the plan. I had to acquire the help of an outside wire and cable team, miles of cable, construction crews, and equipment while following an aggressive timeline for completion. We finished the project within scope, on time, and within budget while suffering no loss of capabilities or degrading the commander's ability to command.
