Dr. Merkle joined ERAU after 17 years on the technical staff of Sandia National Laboratories. He holds a doctorate in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech, with M.S. degree in Marine Environmental Science (Stony Brook), and B.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering and Management (M.I.T.). Assignments to the Department of Defense from Sandia included scientific advisor roles to the Joint chemical and biological defense program and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency Advanced Systems and Concepts Office. He has developed technology and performed research for international materials tracking and security, arms control, and homeland infrastructure security. His research interests include off-planet life support, aquaponics, atmospheric fate and transport modeling, environmental system dynamics, sustainable engineering, and water quality and treatment.
