Mr. Heinlein joined American Contractors Insurance Group in 2002, where he contributes to the successful safety initiatives, including active jobsite involvement and leadership training, for multiple construction clients representing both union and open-shop contractors. These contractors combine to represent over 45,000 direct-hire employees and approximately 1% of the entire construction performed in the United States each year. Prior to coming to work for ACIG, Mr. Heinlein worked as the Director of Construction Services for FDR and Associates in Nashville, TN. He is also the past National Safety & Health Director for the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America.
Mr. Heinlein holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Master's degree in Safety & Environmental Management from West Virginia University. He holds ARM, CIT, CPEA, CRIS, CSHM, CSP, FAIHA, FASSP, OHST and STSC safety, health, environmental and risk management certifications and designations.
Mr. Heinlein has been in the OHS profession for over 29 years, and is a noted international speaker and author/contributor to books and publications. He has been asked to participate as an awards judge for organizations such as the Associated General Contractor of American (AGC) Construction Safety Excellence Awards, AGC of America Foundation Annual Case Study Scholarships, AGC of Washington Construction Safety Excellence Awards, the Annual Engineering News Report (ENR) International, National and Regional Safety Awards, HCSS Intern Awards the International Risk Management Institute (IRMI) Gary Bird Horizon Awards, as well as the National Safety Council Campbell Awards and the Green Cross Awards.
Mr. Heinlein is a member of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) Construction Sector. He also sits on the editorial advisory board for Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) magazine. Mr. Heinlein was appointed to the Grainger Innovation Council in 2018.
Mr. Heinlein recently completed a series of safety education videos for both Grainger and ConstrucTech. Mr. Heinlein has served as a subject matter expert for a number of SimCoach Games Construction safety and health micro-learning games.
He is very active in working with university Safety and Health Programs, both in the United States and internationally. Mr. Heinlein is the past Chair and current member of West Virginia University's Safety Management Graduate Program Visiting Committee. He is an Advisory Member for the following Undergraduate Safety Programs: Keene State College, The University of Wisconsin – Platteville, and the University Advisory Group for University of Fredericton – Canada. He also works with PhD students at both Arizona State University and the University of Alaska – Anchorage to assist them with their research and dissertations.
Mr. Heinlein was part of taskforce that helped develop one of the first construction safety undergraduate programs in the country at Keene State College. He is a visiting instructor within the West Virginia University Safety Management Graduate Program, and I am a part-time instructor at Columbia Southern University as well as a visiting instructor for the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Worldwide University. Mr. Heinlein currently mentors two students – an Environmental Health and Safety major at Oakland University and a senior in high school.
Mr. Heinlein was elected in 2017 to serve a three-year term as Director-at-Large for the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) and has completed a second term as a Board Director for the Alliance of Hazardous Materials Professionals (AHMP). Mr. Heinlein also served as the President of the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) where he currently acts as one of 20 International Ambassadors worldwide. He is also a past Delegate of the International Network Safety and Health Practitioners Organization (INSPHO).
This year Mr. Heinlein was named an ASSP Fellow. Mr. Heinlein is also a BCSP’s Certified Safety Professional 2019 Award of Excellence recipient. He is also a National Safety Council Distinguished Service to Safety Award (DSSA). Mr. Heinlein is also a Fellow awarded by the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA)AHH. This past year the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) named him as Distinguished Lecturer. He was appointed to the Grainger Innovation Council in 2016, and has also been utilized as a subject matter expert for SimCoach Games and the Laborers Safety and Health Fund.
Mr. Heinlein is an active member of the Alliance of Hazardous Materials Professionals (AHMP), American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP), the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America, and the National Safety Council (NSC).
Mr. Heinlein is an exemplary community leader by organizing his township’s annual Halloween 5K fundraiser, coaching youth sports, assisting with Habitat for Humanity, Rotary International, and Special Olympics.
