Areas of Expertise
Dr. Flavio A. C. Mendonca is an assistant professor and researcher in the Aeronautical Science Department at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach. Prior to joining ERAU Dr. Mendonca was an assistant professor at Purdue University. His primary responsibilities include teaching undergraduate-level courses in Crew Resource Management and conducting research projects.
Dr. Mendonca is a Brazilian Air Force retired officer, a pilot, and a Flight Safety Officer (1986-2014). As a member of the Brazilian Aeronautical Accidents Investigation and Prevention Center (CENIPA) for almost 14 years, Dr. Mendonca acted in the capacity of Investigator-in-Charge of several aircraft accidents and serious incidents involving Part 121 and Part 135 operators, and military aircraft. He also provided expertise related to aviation safety and the investigation of aircraft accidents and incidents during the ICAO safety management panel. In this capacity, Dr. Mendonca acted as an adviser to the Brazilian team during the development of the first edition of the ICAO Annex 19 – Safety Management. He holds a Brazilian Airline Transport Pilot License with Single-and Multiengine, Learjet 30, and Embraer 110 Ratings. He also holds a Brazilian certified Flight Instructor certificate with Airplane Single-and Multiengine and Instrument Ratings. Additionally, Dr. Mendonca holds an FAA Private Pilot Certificate with Single-and Multiengine Ratings (based upon a foreign pilot license), an FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate with Single-Engine Rating, and an FAA Advanced Ground Instructor certificate. He has over 30 years of experience as a pilot, with approximately 4,000 flight hours.
Dr. Mendonca completed his Ph.D. in the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana (2017), and a master’s degree in aviation safety at the University of Central Missouri (2009). His Bachelor’s degree was in aviation management earned at the Brazilian Air Force Academy (1989).
Dr. Mendonca's research interests include Aircraft Accident Investigation, Human Factors, Safety Management Systems, Wildlife Hazards to Aviation, and Competence Based Education. He maintains an active research agenda, which has recently focused on the safety management of wildlife hazards to aviation, and in fatigue identification and management in a Part 141 Collegiate Aviation Environment. He has authored/co-authored over 18 peer-refereed journal articles, and over 50 conference proceedings. It is important to mention that as a flight safety officer, an aircraft accident investigator, and a CENIPA’s member during almost 14 years of his tenure in the Brazilian Air Force, Dr. Mendonca authored a great number of technical reports (e.g., aircraft accident investigation reports; aviation safety programs), some with proprietary data and not cleared for publishing.
