Biography
Dr. Mariano (Mario) Guagliardo is an assistant professor of chemistry in the Physical Sciences Department. Dr. Guagliardo holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from Texas Tech University and an M.S. in chemistry from University of Palermo (Italy).
His research interests focus on organometallic synthesis and sustainable catalysis. While at University of Palermo, Dr. Guagliardo developed a series of hybrid fullerene-ionic liquid Cu(II) complexes that can be used as highly effective catalysts for asymmetric transformations. During his Ph.D., he worked on the design of water-soluble copper(II) Schiff base complexes; these species were employed to promote C-H activation and coupling reactions in aqueous medium, reducing the use of toxic volatile organic solvents and allowing for simple separations of the reaction products.
Dr. Guagliardo is a member of the American Chemical Society and a scholar of the ACS Green Chemistry Summer School.
