Biography
Dr. Tiziano "Tizi" Bernard is an experimental flight test engineer and pilot. Born and raised in Trieste, Italy, he graduated from the International School of Trieste before moving to the United States to study at Florida Tech. He earned a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering, a M.S. in Flight Test Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Human-Centered Design (with a specialty in cognitive engineering). He studied under cognitive engineering researchers and flight test experts such as Dr. Ralph Kimberlin, Dr. Guy A. Boy, and Dr. A. Lucas Stephane.
For his dissertation, he studied pilot cognitive activity during critical phases of flight using flight test methods in virtual reality (VR). He spent several years studying systems-induced loss of control (LOC) causal factors and developing LOC recovery avionics for large aircraft at the Human-Centered Design Institute (HCDi) at Florida Tech.
Outside of ERAU, Dr. Bernard is an experimental flight test engineer for Gulfstream Aerospace, flying on GVII (G400/500/600) and GVIII (G700/G800) aircraft. He is also a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI/CFII) at Savannah Aviation. He previously was an avionics designer and evaluator for GARMIN, with experience on integrated, aftermarket, and experimental cockpits. He primarily worked on large-cabin flight decks and life-critical systems. He is an inventor on two patents and continues to serve the aerospace world as a lecturer, instructor, volunteer pilot, and mentor (e.g., Project Lead the Way).
For his dedication in the sciences he was awarded the Order of Merit of Savoy (Royal House of Italy) and the Bronzean Medal of the City of Trieste.
